Even the mighty nutcracker drill was rendered toothless. Offensive-line coach Nate Davis Mike Solari explained the drill in epic detail — it took 14 minutes — before players walked away without so much as a shoulder bump.
Such was the nature of the first day of training camp — a dress rehearsal on grass. The Sunday session was not on the original schedule. Coach Mike Singletary added it recently after deciding the team needed one final chance to review things in slow motion.
"It's just a matter of pressing the details and making sure that in everything we do, we understand exactly what it is we are doing," he said.

Nose tackle Aubrayo Franklin did not arrive at team headquarters and has yet to sign the $7,003,000 tender that comes with being designated as the team's franchise player.
Franklin already had skipped the team's offseason workouts and minicamps in hopes of negotiating a long-term contract. "There's no mistaking about it: Aubrayo is one of a kind. I love playing with Aubrayo," Willis said. "At the same time, I know this is a business and, at the end of the day, we have to work with who we have here. I know everything is going to work itself out, and that's out of my control.
"If I could snap my fingers, and make him be here, I would. But I can't. I hope everything gets worked out, but we have to keep going forward."
Franklin, entering his eighth season, is coming off a career-best year, anchoring a defensive line that held opponents to 3.6 yards per carry, tied for the second in the NFL.
